The Seminole Tribe and the State of Florida are battling for control of Florida’s sports betting market. This legal battle may be resolved in 2022, but that doesn’t mean online sports betting in the Sunshine State is going to happen anytime soon.
Florida has three college football powerhouses, two Major League Baseball teams, and two NHL teams. It’s also home to a number of professional sports teams, including the NBA’s Orlando Magic and the Stanley Cup-winning Tampa Bay Lightning.
During the latest round of negotiations, the Seminole Tribe proposed a sweeping gaming plan that would allow pari-mutuel operators to offer designated player card games and mobile sports betting across the state. But the proposal was stymied by a local group’s challenge to its constitutionality.
A federal court vacated the 2021 gaming compact in August, which left the state without its first mobile sportsbook. While the lawsuits are still pending, the compact will not be resurrected until at least 2022.
However, the state’s most recent sports betting proposal could get things back on track. According to the Orlando Sentinel, the latest proposal would allow Florida’s pari-mutuels to continue offering designated player card games.
In addition, a new, larger gaming deal that would cover everything from horse racing to blackjack is in the works. The government has also submitted an answer to the Seminole Tribe’s appeal.
